My preferences would be to install Mycroft software on my already configured and working Raspbian Stretch. Can this be done rather than download another .img?

Picroft is built on top of Raspbian Jessie Lite, rather than Stretch and our early Stretch tests have shown some problems. That said, the code is opensource, and available here if you’d like to take a look:
