Research Study for Smart Device Owners

Potentially relevant to you all here, we’re currently running a research study for smart device owners

The standard text from our ad as well as my email address are below. I’m happy to answer any questions.

Have you ever wondered what data your smart home devices were collecting, and where they were sending it? Or have you ever scrolled through a privacy policy without understanding what the pages of text actually allow a company to do with information about you?

We are conducting a study to evaluate a prototype that helps tackle these problems. The prototype keeps track of your smart devices and learns who they communicate with, combining this with information we have about different companies to give you an insight into how data flows in your home.

We are looking for participants who own and use smart devices (e.g. Alexa, Nest, Hue, Netgear, or Sonos devices) at home. You would be invited to use the privacy assistant in your home for around six weeks and give any feedback you might have. During this time we will be in regular contact to see how useful such an assistant might be.

If you are interested and would like more information please william.seymour@cs.ox.ac.uk. If you choose to take part you will be compensated for your time.
