Google home is down, good reason for standalone?

Google has confirmed that google home and apparently chromecast also are down. I suspect, based on comments Ive seen here, that desire for standalone(or at least some autonomy) will increase. These types of things are rare, but most of the major 'cloud' vendors have had at least one.
